Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka both lose in US Open first round
Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka both lost in their opening rounds, leaving them to finish on 0-2 in the women’s singles at the US Open.
The world #1-seeded Raducanu lost to Canadian Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-4 in two sets, while the world #5 Osaka lost to former world No1 Caroline Wozniacki 7-6(1), 0-6, 2-6 in two sets.
“It’s a tough way to open,” Raducanu said, “but I’m proud of the way I fought and fought until the end.”
“All I know is I love tennis,” Osaka said. She added that the US Open offers such opportunities to win tournaments. “I want to be a champion in every tournament I play in.”
“It felt horrible because I started the match with a lot of expectations but I just tried to win in a way that felt the most to me.”
Wozniacki had not played at the US Open since she won the first round of the 2010 US Open as a qualifier. The 21-year-old made a good impression in her first singles match against Raducanu. “This was not my best match,” Wozniacki said. “I have played some really, really bad matches this year already.”
