Serena Williams hails Tiger Woods’ influence as she continues her US Open run
Serena Williams spoke out on Thursday regarding the influence of Tiger Woods and the importance of the US Open.
“When he hits that ball, when he’s playing, we’re going to see one thing,” she said. “I was looking at him and he was staring at me and he was kind of smiling. That’s really cool. I love that.”
Just five weeks ago we were talking about the impact of the absence of Roger Federer, and now it’s about the return of Tiger Woods.
The 34-year-old star took over the spotlight after Serena pulled out of the 2018 US Open, citing a right knee injury. The US Open begins Thursday, but the world will be watching on the other side of the Atlantic.
“I mean, the last time they were here, we knew they’d be here,” Serena told the Associated Press. “I think I was getting so much positive energy, people were so excited. But now, it’s probably more important for me to just stay focused.”
While Serena has been able to keep a cool head and stay away from the hype, she’s shown an improved level of confidence. She’s starting to dominate the court again, which is great for the US Open.

“I’m just trying to come out here and play my game,” Serena said, per the AP. “If I do that, I think I’ve got a good chance. I’m not thinking about anything else other than playing my game.”
