NLCS: Bryce Harper Leads Phillies to World Series Title
The last time Bryce Harper was a Cy Young winner. The last time he made an All-Star team. The last time he pitched a no-hitter.
Last time these two teams met up for a six-game series.
And the last time it didn’t turn out too well.
Yes, the Phillies have been the better team in those six games, taking two of three to complete a three-peat of being the team that went to the playoffs. They scored four runs in Game 4 and two more in Game 5, but only tied the game in Game 6.
The Yankees have been the better team in those six games, scoring two runs in Game 4 and five more in Game 5 to complete a three-peat of being the best team in the American League. They had never scored more than three runs in a postseason game before the Phillies blew them out at Citizens Bank Park.
But that was just the start of it.
The Phillies were the class of the league for most of the season, with a record of 65–43. The Yankees were just 2½ games behind them in the wild card and the first half the season was considered the Yankees season. But things happened quickly.
The Yankee bullpen gave up only one run in the first four games of the series, against the Phillies, who were starting out to be the best team in the American League.
The Phillies bullpen gave up only three runs in the five games after the Yankees, starting with Game 1 in New York when Charlie Morton got his first career shutout. The Phillies never were in the series anyway, since they lost in Game 5.
But just as quickly as the Yankees have been the better team, they are the better team now.
No one saw it coming. This was the Yankees coming back.
Since their last game of the regular season, the Yankees have not lost a game. The Phillies have lost four in a row.
Game 1 of the Division Series was the game where the Phillies won the series.
