Tourists, who were being held by the indigenous group calling itself the “People of the Coast”, after they attempted to protest and block the oil exploration off Peru’s coast, were released today, said a spokesman for the country’s coast guard.
“There was a problem with people who were at the spot, and we had to pull them out of the water,” Jorge Valasco said, quoted by news agency ANS.

Tourists, who were being held by the indigenous group calling itself the “People of the Coast”, after they attempted to protest and block the oil exploration off Peru’s coast, were released today, said a spokesman for the country’s coast guard.

The group, calling itself the “People of the Coast”, is led by a young man who was arrested after he allegedly climbed onto the beach to remove the tourists, who had been held for more than a year, according to a statement from the group’s leader.
“They were carrying fishing equipment, and we had to force them from the beach,” Rufino Roca told reporters.
ROCA, the secretary of the People of the Coast, was arrested on charges of “incitement of violence, attempted extortion, and possession of drugs”.
“I think the government should protect the indigenous people and not give them the worst conditions,” said Julio Sanchez, the leader of a group called the “People of the Coast”.
“We protest against the government for keeping us in a place where we are supposed to be safe without having any means of survival,” he told news agency ANS.
